First-half formats

What the first half looks like

Every gathering feels different. Your application lets us know which activities you'd be interested in. Here are some examples.

A podcast microphone against a cool blue-grey wall

Listen, then discuss

Everyone listens to a specific podcast or watches a video before we meet, and at the gathering we discuss it in small groups.

e.g. Halal investing

An audience watching a speaker, seen from behind

Watch together

No homework. We watch or listen to something together at the venue, then open it up for discussion.

e.g. How to enhance emotional intelligence

A group of friends, seen from behind, looking out over the Calgary skyline from a hilltop at sunset

Movement

A group walk on an easy Calgary trail, with plenty of chances to talk casually along the way.

e.g. Fish Creek or Nose Hill

A pour-over coffee station with a Chemex

Make something

A hosted session where you make something new. It's a great way to broaden your skills.

e.g. Coffee workshop, cooking class

Second-half format

What the second half looks like

One‑on‑one introductions

Every gathering ends the same way: 5-minute conversations with each person of the opposite gender, at small tables in an open room. Before you leave, privately choose who you'd like to see again.

About Us

Why we started this

Illustration of two friends, one in a hijab and one with curly hair and glasses, sitting at a sunlit table with a laptop, coffee and notebook, looking at each other mid-conversation

We’re two friends in our 30s, living in Calgary, who found ourselves talking often about the challenges of meeting marriage-minded people.

Dating apps can feel limiting, and traditional matchmaking events don’t always feel like the best use of an already busy schedule. As professionals ourselves, we wanted something we would genuinely look forward to attending - an experience that felt worthwhile, whether or not we happened to meet our person that night.

That became the idea behind Maktub Gatherings: thoughtfully curated evenings built around learning something new, getting active, or trying something hands-on together. You come for the experience, meet people naturally along the way, and participate in some speed dating too.

Our hope is that you leave each gathering with a new skill, a new experience, a good conversation, or perhaps a connection you’d like to explore. Finding a match would be wonderful, but we don’t think it should be the only thing that makes an evening worthwhile.

We’re excited to see what this becomes and we’re looking forward to meeting you all!

FAQ

Before you apply

If your question isn't here, email us and we'll get back to you.

Who can apply?

Single Muslims aged 30 to 45 who live in Alberta and can attend events in person in Calgary. Divorced and widowed applicants are welcome!

Is this done in a halal way?

Every gathering is in a public venue with the whole group present. The speed dating rounds take place in an open room. Modest conduct is expected; we pause for salah, and every guest agrees to follow Islamic guidelines.

How much does it cost?

Applying is free. If you're selected, your invitation includes the ticket price and a link to reserve your seat.

How are guests selected?

We read every application and aim for an equal number of men and women within the age range of 30–45. We also select guests based on their potential compatibility with the other attendees.

What happens in the first half?

You'll join a small mixed group led by a facilitator. Depending on the gathering, you'll discuss a podcast or video, go for a walk, or do a hands-on activity.

How do the one-on-one rounds work?

During the event you'll have 5-minute conversations with each person of the opposite gender, at small tables in an open room. Conversation prompts will be provided to help you break the ice.

What happens after the event?

At the end of the evening you can privately mark who you'd like to speak with again. If the interest is mutual, we introduce you both by email, usually within 48 hours, and if it isn't, nobody finds out.

Will my information be shared?

No. Your application is only used to organize events. We never publish guest lists, and we only pass on your contact details to a mutual match, with both people's consent.
